Juneteenth is finally being recognized as a federal holiday. But there are still so many reparations to be made — especially to help protect the Black trans community in our country. At #LAPride, we’re committed to uplifting and empowering our Black and Black LGBTQ+ brothers, sisters, and siblings and continuing to push the fight for true equality.

Celebrate our Pride AND our history 📓 Did you know that the first LGBTQ+ uprising happened ten years before Stonewall right here in LA?

In 1959, a group of drag queens and hustlers fought cops in Cooper Do-nuts — a popular meeting place for gay people in the heart of downtown LA. The rioters were furious that LAPD officers were arresting their friends purely for congregating at Cooper Do-nuts.

They pelted the officers with donuts, coffee, and paper plates until the officers were forced to retreat. When they returned with reinforcements, a riot ensued that shut down Main Street for an entire day. That night is widely considered to be the first LGBTQ+ uprising in modern history.

The notion of calling the gay rights movement “Pride” originated here in LA in 1966 from the first gay rights organization, “PRIDE” (Personal Rights in Defense & Education). PRIDE members organized the protest against the raid of The Black Cat Tavern in 1967, carrying signs that said “PRIDE” and became known as the Pride protest.
